In Memoriam

The rewarding and uplifting nature of rescue work also has a downside—the inevitable moments of loss.

Sometimes of the natural order, other times tragic—it is never easy.

Whether caring for an individual for years, or in a few cases merely days or only hours, there is a deep and abiding absence in our hearts when we lose a beloved member of our family.

Here we seek to honor those who have come and gone so that their memory lives on.

Stella Blue

At nearly 40 years of age, Stella Blue was the oldest of our three equine rescues, before she reached the end of her life on May 23, 2021.

Stella Blue was found wandering loose along a roadside and exhibiting signs of severe stress and illness.

Once she landed here with us, Stella was taken to top-notch veterinarians to examine an existing head wound. Alas, it was found to be a type of inoperable tumor, with no way to heal completely.

During her time with us, we made it a top priority to manage her wound and to keep her comfortable and in the best possible health.

When she first arrived Stella was very shy, with little faith in others. But once she began to feel comfortable in her forever home, she proved to be the absolute sweetest girl around.

Despite all she had been through, Stella Blue was full of life and expressed herself joyfully in some way, each and every day of the precious three years she lived here at CHF.

Rest easy our beauty.

Sir Van dairy calf

Sir Van

Sir Van

Sir Van was a very sick calf discarded by the dairy industry. Unfortunately, despite critical care intervention on his behalf, he did not make it out alive.

Had intervention been successful, he would have received love and care as a part of the Changing Hearts family.

Sir Van was one of many millions of babies torn from their mothers each year merely to satisfy the needless demand for dairy products. We mourn the senseless tragedy of his death.

We love you, Sir Van! Forever and always, you will be in OUR hearts!

Katie the chicken

Katie

Sadly, Katie died at only 6 months old.

Fortunately, we were able to give her a most beautiful life that she otherwise would not have known.

Her death will not be in vain. We share her story to shed light for all animals who suffer in our broken food system.

Fly high, Katie. You were so very loved.
